Backcountry Trip Gear List

Here's the checklist I go through when packing for trips into the mountains, whether for a day hike, a summer backpacking trip, a winter backpacking trip, or a mountaineering trip.   The stuff listed under "Extra Gear for the Truck" either lives in the truck or gets put in the truck before every trip.

Note 1: Pemican bars pack 400 calories into a 130g package with 60% carbs, 20% protein, 20% fat, a good ratio for sustain energy. Two Clif MoJo bars (Honey roasted peanut) pack 420 calories into 90g, with 40% carbs, 20% protein, 40% fat.

Note 2: I make sure all my meals can be cooked and eaten directly from the package (which could be a Ziploc bag) requiring only hot water. No bowl, no pot cleanup required. Instant oatmeal, freeze dried dinners, and mashed potato flakes are great.

Note 3: For camping on snow the Megamid (actually I use the lighter Megalight) is a much better choice than a tent.

Note 4: On each of my topo maps, I write the frequencies and offsets of VHF repeaters and commercial operators in the area.  The Britsh Columbia Forest Service repeaters and logging companies' operational frequencies are my first choice, because they're everywhere, and are usually monitored.
